Beginner Campers Checklist

Camping is one of the best outdoor activities you can do if you want to spend some great deal of time away from the hustle and bustle of city life. It helps you relax and unwind, and most of all, spend quality time with your friends, your family, and your loved ones. Camping also gives you a lot of health benefits that could help improve your physical and mental well-being. In this article, we speak about being prepared for all your outdoor adventures by carrying with you a camping checklist.

Beginner Campers Checklist

For starters, here are the essential camping checklist or “must-have’s” that you can borrow or invest as needed.

Building Your Camping Shelter

Of course, you cannot define camping without bringing your own portable shelter. In choosing a campsite, look for a flat area with fewer bumps or rocky parts for greater comfort when sleeping.

Beginner Campers Checklist
  • Tent (the size will depend on how many will share in your tent)
  • Ground cover/tarp
  • Sleeping bags (or sheets & blankets)
  • Sleeping pads or air mattresses
  • Small pillow for extra head comfort

What to Wear and Other Helpful Equipment

This list will differ depending on when you camp, the resources available on-site (bathrooms, water, etc.) and how many days you would intend to stay.

  • Comfortable Clothing
  • Pajamas
  • Jackets, hats, and gloves (for cold weather or cold nights)
  • Camp chairs
  • Beach blanket
  • Baby wipes
  • Basic first aid kit
  • Toiletries (soap, shampoo, toothbrush, toothpaste, etc.)
  • Toilet paper
  • Camp towels
  • Flashlights/headlamps
  • Fire starting tinder, kindling, and firewood for the fire pit
  • Matches or lighter
  • Insect repellant

Cooking on Site

Keep your camp meals simple, and your camp kitchen pretty minimal. However, you can add on as needed.

  • Camp stove and propane/butane
  • Plates, cups, and utensils
  • Cooking utensils, pots, and pans
  • Cooler with ice
  • Reusable water bottles
  • Food items for meals, plus plenty of snacks
  • S’mores supplies (graham crackers, marshmallows & chocolate)
  • Water and other drinks of choice
  • Paper towel
  • Trash bags

Camping with Kids

Beginner Campers Checklist

If you’re bringing your kids in camping, you may need extra items that are essential in your camping checklist:

  • Portable crib for younger kids
  • Kids’ favorite items for sleep time
  • Diapers/nappies (if applicable)
  • Portable high chair or booster seat for younger kids
  • Formula or baby food for infants as needed

One of the benefits of camping is that it lets you connect with nature. However, you should also be mindful of your surroundings. If you are venturing outdoors, you must ask the assistance of a forest ranger or someone knowledgeable of the area to give you proper guidance. More importantly, avoid leaving trash in the campsite. As much as possible, avoid single-use plastics in your camping items. Instead, use recyclable and reusable materials for the benefit of the environment.

Hopefully, this camping checklist will give you a good head start in your great outdoor adventure!
